The decision to remove an existing cementitious mortar should be carefully considered. The depth and density of the cement mortar should firstly be assessed, and it is sometimes the case that removing the existing cement mortar will, on balance, do more harm than good. When the density and depth of the mortar has been assessed and the decision has been made to re-point, the removal of the mortar should be done in such a way as to protect the masonry as much as possible. We always specify the use of hand tools only, which is universally accepted as good practice. Depending on the significance of your building however, there may be opportunities to use mechanical tools such as ArborTech brick saws.
